Should Children be Taught to Read in Kindergarten

Our educational systems have advanced so much over the last several decades. Children are being taught quicker and introduced sooner to more subjects. Kindergarten used to be the beginning of preparation for regular school. You learned your ABC's, how to count, tie your shoes, zip zippers and print your name. You were also taught some manners, how to follow instructions and get along with other children. Things have advanced since then and they actually bring homework home in some areas. Should Children be Taught to Read in Kindergarten? I think it really depends on the area the child is from, and whether they have had enough interaction at home or had a chance to go to preschool to prepare for kindergarten.
