The reason that they call it “Breakfast”, to begin with is “breaking the fast”. In other words, your body is fasting while you sleep. That is the time of day that you don't have the option to eat when you feel hungry, because you are asleep, the body is resting, and at the same time it is fasting. Depending on how many hours you sleep, how many hours you eat before bed time, this fast can be for 6 to 12 hours. So, when you wake up in the morning, your body needs something to give it a jump start. It needs nourishment, vitamins, minerals, amino acids, carbohydrates, antioxidants, and fuel for energy. If you don't eat a decent, healthy breakfast before you start your day, you will find yourself tired and sluggish within a couple hours of waking. This doesn't mean you should overload it with caffeine or sugar. By no means will this help your body function the way it needs to during the day. Even if you are not a big eater, you should at least have a little dairy, fruit, fiber and carbohydrates to give your body something to start burning. Adding some protein is another good idea. This is the most important meal of the day. If you only eat small snacks during the day instead of meals, or if you don't eat at all until dinner time, at least give your body the advantage of getting that jump start in the morning. |
