Keeping your triglycerides low is essential. Triglycerides are fatty deposits stored in your body. Once your body has converted your food into energy, the glucose is sent to your liver, which then is changed to glycogen. Glycogen is then stored in your muscles. Once the muscles have that they need it is sent back to your liver again. This is where it is turned into triglycerides. Now the body can store a very large amount of this in your liver, however, it doesn't all make it back to liver. Some of it stays in your blood vessels, and that is where the problems develop. High triglycerides is when there is too much staying in the blood and not being stored in the Liver. This process makes your blood thicker, which can lead to clogged arteries. High triglycerides have also been associated with pancreatic cancer. The saying “You are what you eat” really applies here, since the carbohydrates you eat is the beginning of your triglycerides. One way to lower you triglycerides is to eat well balanced diet with lots of fresh vegetables and fruit, and to include lower levels of carbohydrate. Also avoid excess sugar since it is turned into glucose, which in turn is also turned into triglycerides. |
