I remember an old saying around my house when I was younger. “An Apple a Day Keeps the Doctor Away.” This was a saying very common around households in the 1950's and 1960's. They were more on target than they thought they were.
Apples come in many different varieties. There are Delicious Red, Macintosh, Granny, Yellow, Cortland, Baldwins, Crabapples, Golden Delicious, Gala's, Jonathans, and York Imperials just to name a few. Each has it's own unique sweet flavor. There are many dishes that can be made from apples including cobblers, pies, baked apples and turnovers. Apples are also delicious diced and fried with potatoes.
Apples have a lot of nutritional value. The contain Magnesium, Phosphorus, Zinc, Vitamin C, Thiamin, Riboflavin, Niacin, Pantothenic Acid, Vitamin B6, Vitamin B12, Folate, Vitamin A, Vitamin E, Phytonutrients, Phytstwrols, Lycopene, Lutein, Zeaxanthin, Calciium and Iron. They contain no cholesterol and are very low in calories.
Apples, in the diet world are also known as natural diuretic, especially when used in Apple Cider Vinegar. Many diet products include this as one of their ingredients, but you can get the same effect by eating the apples or buying Apple cider vinegar and taking two tablespoons a day.
Apples make healthy snacks for you and your kids, and unless you have an aleergy to pectin, have no side effects except stopping hunger cravings and feeding the body good nutrients. Go ahead, have that Apple a day and keep the doctor away. |
