Walking is one of the best exercises you can get. Stop and think about it. Years ago, people used to walk everywhere. Wagon trains would go across this country with people moving to new locations. They didn't all ride in the wagons or on horses. They walked alongside. Then when they established their little towns, they walked from their close by houses or farms to the general store, to the doctor, to other peoples homes and to church. There wasn't a problem with obesity. They ate off the land, hunted or raised cattle, sheep, pigs, chickens and grew vegetables.
Maybe we need to get back to some of those basics. Do things like walk to the corner store, the library, your friends house, or the park. Walk around the block a couple times, walk up the stairs instead of taking the elevator, after all, isn't that what they did before there were elevators.
Stop and think about this. When Moses finally got Pharoah to let God's people go, how did they get where they were going? Sure there were some wagons and horses, but the majority of the people walked. They walked for forty years.
Walking increases the blood flow and oxygen to your heart and circulatory system. It helps tone your muscles, it helps burn calories, you breathe in fresh air, and who knows the what kind of scenery you will see on the way that you would otherwise miss if your were driving. You can walk your way to better health. |
