Antioxidants are molecules that have the ability to either slow down or prevent the oxidation of other molecules. This in turn lowers the amount of free radicals that are produced in the body through chemical reactions. Free radicals are associated with the breaking down of physiological functions in the body, and are present in the aging process.
The oxidation process is essential for life to exist. Too much oxidation can cause free radicals, too little causes oxidative stress, which like free radicals can cause the damage and destruction of cells. Research suggests that there is a link between some disease and oxidative stress, but no definitive results as of yet have been confirmed.
Antioxidants are widely used in pharmacology to treat neurodegenerative, and heart diseases. Research studies revealed promising results, but clinical trials uncovered drawbacks if abused. It is also thought that a regular intake of antioxidants can reduce the likeliness of one contracting some forms of cancer. They are also used in other industries. In the fashion industry they are used in cosmetics. Antioxidants are also found in dietary supplements and are used in the preservation of food.
The most common form of antioxidants is vitamins C and E. Ascorbic acid has the same properties and is a form of vitamin C. They can also be found in various enzymes. Vegetables are another food source that contain high levels of antioxidants. All the newly labeled “super foods” are praised for their high content of antioxidants. Pomegranates and the Acai berry fall into this super food category.
