Diabetes Health #3 : Exercising

Unfortunately, therer are many people who have diabetes for years without knowing, simply because they didn't have regular check-ups, or didn't show any immediate symptoms. Long term effects of untreated diabetes or out of control diabetes include decreased circulation, which in turn can cause hemorrhages that effect your vision, slow healing infections and wounds, high blood pressure which can lead to heart attack or stroke, kidney damage, hardening of the ateries and diabetic neuropathy.

If the diabetes is left untreated for too long, some of these long term effects cannot be reveresed. Nerve endings in the feet will start to die due to a decrease in circulation. The skin can become thin and weak and other organs can suffer as well. Lack of exercise, leading a sedentary life style and improper eating can actually cause diabetes.

However, the right kind of exercise can help improve your circulation and slow down the deteriorating process of some of these illnesses and conditions. If you are diabetic, you should consult your doctor before starting any kind of exercise program. Your ability to exercise could be limited if the the diabetes has already caused problems with other parts of your body.

Stretching exercises, lifting weights, aerobic exercises, and strengthening exercises are all suggested for diabetics. Walking is one of the best exercises you can do. Wak briskly for 20 minutes 2 to 3 times a day. Use correct shoes for walking since neuropathy is a side effect of diabetes that often effects the feeling in your feet. You will want exercises that speed up your metabolism and get your blood flowing. This will help with circulation and oxygen flow to your heart and brain.
