Diabetics need to watch everything they eat since their body does not produce the insulin it needs. One of the major things they should stay away from is alcohol. The majority of alcoholic products made today are made with tons of sugar. This is not only bad for diabetics, but alcoholic beverages can affect your blood pressure, liver, kidneys and heart also. Diabetes can also deteriorate these other other organs, and adding alcohol will only intensify and speed up problems in these areas. Diabetics should eat 4 to 5 small meals a day to help keep their insulin levels at an even keel. They should not be eating an abundance of foods with sugar, fat, carbohydrates, dairy and protein. This means that they need to watch the type of snack foods they eat, limit the quantity of cereals, white breads and rice. They should also limit the amount of eggs, milk and meat products. When eating meat they should eat very lean cuts of meat. Stick with pastas and breads that are made from whole grains and not a lot of added preservatives. Brown rice, barley and beans are good additions to your diet. Eat at least four to five servings of vegetables and fruit a day, the fresher, the better. If you can't get fresh, go for frozen, there are less preservatives, salt or sugar added to frozen produce. Stay away from sodas, fruit juices, sugar sweetened coffee or tea, and sugar sweetened fruity drinks. Also limit yourself on the pastries, whipped toppings, jams, jellies, syrups and other sugary toppings. You may want to opt for some of the sugar free brands of these items. Keep your portions small, since being overweight can contribute to your diabetic symptoms and problems. Eat lean portions of meat, skinless chicken, fish and trimmed pork if you are having meat with your meals. |
