Heart Health #3

Now it is time to look at the way you shop for your meals at home. As you enter the store, bakery goods are in a separate area, stay away from that area and head right for the produce section.

You'll want to get tomatoes, cucumbers, green, red and /or yellow peppers, onions, garlic, lettuce (the green leaf or romaine type) fresh spinach, mushrooms and any other fresh vegetable that you like. You should also get some yellow and green squash, cabbage, fresh green beans or pole beans.

If you like onions, pick up some of the green onions, they are good with meals and inbetween as snacks. Maybe some radishes, celery, and raw carrots. These all make healthy snacks, and you will want to change your snacking habits. If you are going to get potatoes, buy the small red ones, this will help you when you start to reduce your portions.

If you can't find enough fresh vegetables, buy frozen, they have more nutirents and less preservatives than the can vegetables. In fact sometimes a handful of semi frozen veggies makes a great in between meal snack.

Pick up some apples, bannanas, pears, oranges, grapefruit, grapes, peaches, melons and any other kind of fresh fruit that you like. These are great deserts and snacks, and natural sugar is better than refined or artificial.

If you have to have pasta, look for whole grain, wheat or spinach pasta. Buy olive oil for cooking. Use olive oil or yougurt based spreads instead of the vegetable oil margerines or butter. Buy whole grain bread products. Read your ingredients and get the type that has more natural ingredients in it.

Buy organic pastas sauces, juices, and canned goods. They even have organic soups and stews. Read your labels, and watch the sodium count in everything you buy.

If you need soda, go for the diet or free sodas. Juices would be better, but again you want to watch for added sugar and preservatives.

Stay away from the canned fruit because of the preservatives and heavey syrup. If you have to buy these, opt for the light variety and rinse the syrup out befor eating the fruit.

Stay away from the fatty, sugary cookies, cakes, pies and donuts. Try some granola bars, low fat yogurt or wheat crackers instead.

Buy a lot of skinless boneless chicke, there are many ways to cook this. Buy fish, unbreaded and/ or canned in water. If you have touse pork or beef in your cooking, be sure to get the leanest cuts and divide them into smaller portions for your meals.
