Keeping your heart healthy takes some research and discipline. Hopefully this series will help you develop the eating, exercising and lifestyle habits that will help you maintain your healthy heart. The first step in this process is to look at the way you eat. Buy yourself a small notebook to carry with you. Now in this note book you are going to list everything you eat and drink all day long for at least two to three weeks, maybe even a month if you are a person with several different eating moods.
You want to write down everything, even if it is just a mint patty to a full sized dinner. List all your meals, snacks, drinks and condiments and if you know the portion size, try to write that down also.
Then after you have logged this for the time you are using (2 -4 weeks) you want to divide it into columns. For each week you want 5 columns. In the first column you will list all of your meats and proteins. In the second column will be all your fruits and vegetables. The third column will be all our sugars and carbohydrates. the fourth column will be all of your snacks and drinks. The fifth column will anything that doesn't fit in the other columns.
Is your snack list exceptionally long? Are you eating more meats and proteins than fruits and vegetables? Are you drinking enough fluids?
In Heart Health #2 we will start tearing these columns apart and looking at the way you eat. Developing a healthy eating regimen is the first step in heart health.
