Your Body Needs Protein

Protein helps repair damaged tissue and build new tissue cells. Your hair and nails are almost all protein. Protein is also involved in keeping your bones, muscles, skin and blood healthy. Proteins create amino acids that are necessary for the body to rejuvenate and renew itself in just about every organ and part. Protein also helps in providing energy and boosting your metabolism.

The body stores many things including fat, but protein is not one of the nutrients it stores, so it needs to be replenished each day. Many diets today are pushing for high carbohydrate and protein consumption, however many medical advisors say that too many carbohydrates are not good for you, and it isn’t the amount of protein you consume, it is the source of your protein.

Protein deficiencies are usually manifested in children in poor third world countries. Evidence of the existence of this health problem are symptoms like hair loss, pale, yellow or discolored skin, slow or retarded growth, non-healing wounds, liver and digestion problems and immunity problems.

Sources of protein include meat, milk, eggs, fish, soybeans, peas, beans and nuts. Animal proteins are higher in saturated fats. Fish products including abalone, tuna and snails are very low in saturated fat content.

Because animal and vegetable proteins are associated with different amino acids, you need to consume quantities from both sources each day.
